Licensing

Overview

The basically Sorter is a source-available hardware project. Different components are licensed under different terms:

• Hardware (CAD files, BOMs, schematics): CC BY-NC-SA 4.0
• Software (firmware, host software, web interfaces): MIT License + Commons Clause
• Documentation (guides, images, videos): CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

Non-Commercial Use

You are free to use our design files for:

• Personal projects
• Educational purposes
• Research and development

Building a Sorter from the design files is free for non-commercial use, but using that self-built machine to earn revenue (sorting-as-a-service or otherwise) is a commercial use and requires a license.

Commercial Use

Commercial use requires a separate license. This includes:

• Manufacturing Sorters for sale
• Modifying designs and selling products
• Distributing design files commercially
• Operating a self-built Sorter as part of a commercial product or service — including "sorting as a service" (sorting LEGO parts for third parties for a fee or other consideration)

If you purchase a basically Sorter from us or an authorized distributor, you may use that physical unit for any purpose, including commercial use. The non-commercial restriction applies only to the design files.
